Less Randomness, More Choice#385

I believe there is a bit too much randomness in this game. I love the accuracy and chance to miss idea. That is the perfect level of randomness. I think critical hits should be toned down. Either +1 damage for crits, or less random bonuses based on circumstances. I also don’t think Assists should be able to crit, such as plink.

Furthermore, I don’t think we should be getting random assists. I think those options should be preselected as part of the roster. They are all very unbalanced with eachother and leaving them up to chance is just silly.

I also think that the first draw of units at the start of the game should be preselected as part of the roster. The first units you draw are incredibly important to any game. Getting the wrong ones can seriously gimp your play and you can’t really play around it. I do like that anything after is random, however.

I think with these changes, the randomness won’t completely determine who wins the games, but still keeps a big element of surprise. At this time, the game is incredibly unrewarding.

This is the only part I disagree with. You are meant to use your Captain’s cinder abilities to bridge the gap if your starting hand is too expensive.

But the only Captain that can really bridge that gap is Astria. The melee dude doesn’t really have anything to make up for that. He can’t clear ranged units. He can only reduce the damage a little bit. The other dude can throw out the mines and sit back and chill for a little bit, I suppose. But maybe I’m playing those 2 wrong.

I don’t mind the random starting hand, but agree that getting to choose assists (and some balancing of those assists) would be a good idea. I’m also not sold on assist crits. I feel like the game might play better without them, but if they stay in, I’d appreciate some indication in the UI that assists have a crit chance. As it stands it caught me by surprise, and didn’t feel all that great when a unit that would otherwise have been safe got knocked off the table by a system mechanic I wasn’t aware of.

Assists need to be not random. They need to be part of roster building, they are an important aspect of team building. If Assist are kept random I fear for the competitive integrity of the game.

I also agree Assists should not be affected by crits or any multipliers. Assists are a separate system wide mechanic, it does not feel intuitive that they are random, applicable to multipliers or hidden at start of match IMO.

TBH I dont feel good about corrosive+orbital strike either. IMO they should seperate Assists via cost or a point system. Where you spend up to 5 amount of assist points to have Plink (1 cost) + Orbital Strike (4 cost) but you cant have (Corrosive (3 cost) + orbital (4 cost) or any combo that exceeds 5 or maybe 6 max. Ideally I would want Plink to only ever do 1 damage, not crit or even be affected by Corrosive.

That may be another discussion 1 cost Assists like Plink might be too low I would advocate for increasing its cost to 2, honestly I’m unsure if any assists should be 1 cost.

Essentially, I think Assists should be an additional element that aid your Units and strategy but I dont think they (assists) should combo into themselves or create a dynamite where a specific combination of assists are extremely powerful unto themselves.

Having preselected strating units and untils would make matches too similar and ultimately boring. I do agree with the crit part being way too strong and unpredictable though

After further playing, I think I have come up with a better idea to take care of some of the randomness, while keeping plenty of it in, since the devs like it.

First off, I think being able to select 1 unit from your roster to automatically start in your hand would be a good idea. This way we can have at least 1 unit that is good for starting, and the other 2 units are random and can alter the way we open the game,

Second, I think the asists should be split into major and minor. I think the Major should be select as part of your roster, and the minor is random. This way we can select something that compliments our group, and one that will alter the way we play.

This would help alleviate some of the issues, I feel. Outside of that, I still think the crit thing and the assists need alot of work in terms of balance.
